Harmonic Sands @ gallery@central

Event Title: Harmonic Sands
Participating Artists:

Venue:
gallery@central
12 Aberdeen St, Perth

Description: Over a ten day period witness Buddhist Monks transforming Gallery Central into a shrine, with the creation of a sacred and ephemeral sand mandala.
The sand mandala is an intricate sacred artwork made from coloured marble sands. It grows each day as sands are poured a few grains at a time, through ancient funnel implements. The designs, which are 2,500 years old, have been passed through the ages unchanged and are constructed from memory, which is part of a Buddhist Monk‚s rigorous training.
The project invites all to contemplate the impermanence of life by observing the monks spending many hours painstakingly creating something that is then given back to the earth. Drop in to visit the work-in-progress or register to attend the ceremonial opening and closing events. Plus there is also a morning meditation session most days.
Presented by Phen Dhe Ling Tibetan Buddhist Association and proudly supported by the City of Perth and the Office of Multicultural Interests, WA.

Start Date: 02 June 2010
End Date: 12 June 2010

picture show exhibitions @ Wolfe Lane

Event Title: Beauties : an illustration of Victorian printing techniques
Participating Artists: picture show exhibitions

Venue:
Wolfe Lane
Wolf Lane, Perth rear 321 Murray Street

Description: Following on from the success of FotoFreo 2010 Fringe photography exhibition Cities are Like Oceans, picture show brings you Beauties : an illustration of Victorian printing techniques opening at Wolfe Lane on Tuesday 1 June 2010.

Stepping back in time to a more elegant era the exhibition displays a selection of framed pictures from print artists covering the reign of Queen Victoria. Engravings, mezzotints, Baxter prints and lithographs present an overall theme of beauty and elegance suggesting an ethereal continuity not usually evident for this period and certainly not surviving the early years of the 20th century.

Before the age of photographic reproduction on a commercial scale, print making in the 19th century was the only medium in existence for mass communication. Print makers were highly skilled craftsmen with quality prints taking weeks or months to produce a stark juxtaposition to today‚s culture of snap-and-delete digital photography.

The exhibition has been produced in collaboration with Old Templemore Antiques.

End Date: 29 June 2010

Participating Artists: Paul Lacey

Venue:
Greenhill Galleries
6 Gugeri Street, Claremont WA, 6010

Description: This series of paintings 'Black & Blue'‚ had me digging deeper into a long standing interest in naive & outsider art...the uncensored eccentricities from the subconcious that have universal themes & expressions that are often direct and unhindered by intellect.

The environment the works have been incubated & produced in can best be described as rural fugliness relieved by art music & books...referred to in titles and the portrait & still-life subjects-in this case sculptures and furniture by Ondrej Mares and Susan's pinata/calavera sculptures inspired by Mexican Day of the Dead Festival.)
