Troy Barbitta, Jos Coufreur @ Studiio281

Event Title: Colour.

Description: Whether he's stamping his illustrative art onto surfboards or
making his mark on Leeuwin Estate's Art Series wine labels, distinctive
Perth artist and designer Troy Barbitta's focus is on blending the absurd
with the abstract.

An accomplished artist, illustrator, painter and sculptor - and the owner of
Subiaco boutique creative advertising and design studio Barbitta - a
selection of Mr Barbitta's latest contemporary artworks will soon go on show
at Studio281 in Maylands.

The exhibition, entitled COLOUR, opens on June 14 and features 15 of his
latest paintings, alongside works from fellow WA artist Jos Coufreur.

COLOUR runs until July 12

Description: "How we treat the vulnerable is how we define ourselves as a
species"

'Coexist' is a debut solo exhibition by local West Australian Artist Andrea
Carew-Reid. Coexist will showcase a range of original framed pieces.
Andrea's work can be described as a fusion of painting an illustration, with
extensive detail, eclectic patterns and vibrant colours.

"This series of work highlights my love for animals and my support for
animal rights. Subject matter is playful with a frequent merging of
characteristics from animal and human life, as I like to think we are not
all that different. Coexist is a celebration of life for all of Earths
creatures and is driven from a belief that we should cohabit our planet in
harmony."

Description: Mine Own Executioner has established a reputation for
presenting diverse interpretations of the self since the inaugural
exhibition in 1995. Curated in 2014 by Ron Nyisztor, 18 WA artists have
manifested a representation of themselves free from the constraints of an
overarching theme. 'Executioners' Amanda Alderson, Tané Andrews, Rob
Cleworth, Brad Coleman, Moira de la Hunty, Michael Doherty, Abraham
Dunovits, Lee Harrop, Matthew Hunt, Beth Kirkland, André Lipscombe, Andy
Quilty, Max Richards, Nien Schwarz, Monique Tippett, Daniel Webster, Gera
Woltjer and Jurek Wybraniec go beyond commercial representation of likeness,
compelling the audience toward something more complex and meaningful.

Winter Garden @ Gallery Central

Description: The Japan Foundation and the Consulate-General of Japan in
Perth present a touring exhibition curated by Midori Matsui that looks at
Japanese pop culture. Winter Garden shows Japanese artists who reinvent
everyday life to give new meanings to commonplace things - featuring
drawings, paintings and video works by 14 Japanese artists active from
1990-2010 including video by Koki Tanaka (Japan's 2013 Venice Biennale
artist).

Description: Curated by Peggy Lyon and Ashley Yihsin Chang to complement
WA's Heritage Festival, the exhibition Canopy - into the forest reflects on
the natural and cultural heritage of forests in south west Western
Australia. Works by artists Peter Dailey, Mel Dare, Joanne Duffy, Bec
Juniper, Norma MacDonald, Clare McFarlane, Alan Muller, Perdita Phillips,
Gregory Pryor, Nien Schwarz, Nalda Searles, David Small, Holly Story, Paul
Uhlmann, Linda van der Merwe and Philip Ward-Dickson consider contradictory
attitudes towards this natural resource, the mythology of the bush, and
notions of ecology, science, romanticism and indigenous connection.

Description: In DILLIGAF Andy Quilty explores notions surrounding hyper
masculine suburban experience. Growing up in the southern Perth suburb of
Rockingham, Quilty spent a decade working as a labourer in the surfboard
manufacturing industry. In this new body of work he utilises motorbike
burnouts, industrial resin, auto enamel, spray paint and ballpoint pen as
tools for art making - a direct physical reference to the industrial
suburban experience of the artist's social and working past.

Brendan Cox @ Kurb Gallery

Event Title: Polished - Exhibition by Brendan cox.

Description: Polished is a look at Perth city through the eyes of a
surrealist. This exploration of colour, style and architecture leaves the
viewer with a new romantic look at their city. The photographer has taken it
upon himself to show the world that although we are only young, we have
taken ideas from the very greatest and applied them to the polished concrete
metropolitan we call home.

With a small selection of architectural phenomena from surrounding cities,
this collection hopes to compare and contrast Perth within the arena of the
world stage.

Rob Haakman @ Kurb Gallery

Event Title: HITS AND MYTHS.

Description: Rob Haakman is a New Zealand artist who has been living in
Perth for about two years; this is his first solo show in Australia. Having
been producing art in NZ for over 25 years, originally a punk rock cartoon
stylist producing comics, gigposters and record covers, he turned to paint,
combining a surrealist style with a celebration of colour, texture and loose
line work.
