Dawn Gamblen & Minaxi May @ Heathcote Museum & Gallery

Event Title: Plasticity
Participating Artists: Dawn Gamblen & Minaxi May

Venue:
Heathcote Museum & Gallery
Heathcote Cultural Centre, Swan House, Duncraig Road, Applecross

Description: The City of Melville's Heathcote Museum and Gallery will soon be hosting a dynamic collaborative exhibition by South Fremantle artists Dawn Gamblen and Minaxi May. The exhibition, Plasticity, will show the outcome of their artist-in-residence at the Fremantle Arts Centre since December 2009.

Plasticity will be open from Saturday, 24 July to Sunday, 29 August 2010. Plasticity captures the essence of plastic as a vibrantly colourful material that conveys notions of the artificial and inorganic whilst also being undeniably flexible in its use and purpose. Centering on ideas around collecting, artful display, consumerism, process and the experiential nature of art, the artists create sculptural site-specific arrangements using easily identifiable, yet banal, purposeful ready-mades‚ (everyday found and collected objects) in the form of synthetic materials including straws, cups and spray can lids.

Start Date: 24 July 2010
End Date: 29 August 2010
Opening Times: Tues-Fri, 10-3pm; Sat-Sun 11-3pm

Harmonic Sands @ gallery@central

Event Title: Harmonic Sands
Participating Artists:

Venue:
gallery@central
12 Aberdeen St, Perth

Description: Over a ten day period witness Buddhist Monks transforming Gallery Central into a shrine, with the creation of a sacred and ephemeral sand mandala.
The sand mandala is an intricate sacred artwork made from coloured marble sands. It grows each day as sands are poured a few grains at a time, through ancient funnel implements. The designs, which are 2,500 years old, have been passed through the ages unchanged and are constructed from memory, which is part of a Buddhist Monk‚s rigorous training.
The project invites all to contemplate the impermanence of life by observing the monks spending many hours painstakingly creating something that is then given back to the earth. Drop in to visit the work-in-progress or register to attend the ceremonial opening and closing events. Plus there is also a morning meditation session most days.
Presented by Phen Dhe Ling Tibetan Buddhist Association and proudly supported by the City of Perth and the Office of Multicultural Interests, WA.

Start Date: 02 June 2010
End Date: 12 June 2010
