exhibition opens Saturday 02 March 6-8 pm

New works by Lauren Wilhelm

Lauren Wilhelm is a Western Australian artist who has exhibited nationally, in New York and whose recent solo shows have been sold-out. Inspired by history and man's seeming inability to learn from it, Lauren's paintings offer a quirky look at hubris whilst still managing to evoke a stillness and sweet melancholia.

Her latest work is inspired by the idea of land ownership and territory. Dismayed by urban sprawl and large tracts of bushland she remembered as a child being carved up into soulless expanses of identical rooftops, Lauren explores our preoccupation with owning a slice of earth.

Dates: Saturday 02 March 2013 to Thursday 21 March 2013.
Opening Times: open daily 10 am to 5pm.

Rhys Lee @ Venn Gallery

Event Title: Cracked Pots.
Participating Artists: Rhys Lee.

Venue:
Venn Gallery,
16 Queen Street, Perth 6000.

Description: Venn Gallery presents Cracked Pots, a solo exhibition of new works by Melbourne-based artist Rhys Lee. The exhibition is Lee's first presentation of work in Western Australia and features a large 10m painting that has been developed in the gallery space, along with numerous works on paper displaying his distinctive style of free-form portraiture.

Known for his skillful use of colour and haunting imagery, Lee's work exudes an ethereal quality that is expressed through heavy brushstrokes and textured visceral forms. In Cracked Pots, Lee explores fissures in the human condition and looks to uncover these lines of breakage to show the crazed or unhinged parts of the psyche. The resulting artworks are dark and elusive studies that reveal a disparate range of characters and strange beings.

Dates: 8 February 2013 to 22 March 2013.
Opening Times: Tues-Sat, 10-5pm; Fri, 10-7pm.

David Collins @ Venn Gallery

Event Title: Plastic Eden.
Participating Artists: David Collins.

Venue:
Venn Gallery,
16 Queen Street, Perth.

Description: Plastic Eden is a solo exhibition of new photographic works by Perth-based artist David Collins portraying a series of contemporary characters in seductive surrounds. At first glance, the intricately arranged scenes present an opulent sphere where languid beings reign, but beneath are notions exploring a darker terrain.

Collins suggests that technological advances, which aim to liberate the consumer from the hardships of the natural world, have also propelled an ecological awakening, encouraging reflection upon the environment and the damage inflicted on it. He conceives that inhabitants of urban centres often long for a nature that once was and desire an Arcadian existence beyond their realm. In these works, the artist observes that such longings are reflected in little gardens of Eden – tranquility pools in backyards, pot plants on desks, animal decoration – that are often created to allow some control and connection with nature, yet ultimately society is regularly left powerless by nature.

The exhibition explores this tenuous relationship of self-delusion and control resulting from such behaviour, with the portrait subjects acting as conquerors of their own domains; positioned as prominent in their environments, but nevertheless with their control nowhere near absolute..

Dates: 8 February 2013 to 22 March 2013.
Opening Times: Tues-Sat, 10-5pm; Fri, 10-7pm.
