Three questions not to ask about art ...

"Art raises a lot of questions. That's what it does. If an art work in a gallery or a news story has made you ask 'what the …?', it has already started to do its job.

But for many who are not familiar with art, some of the most often asked questions of art just lead to a dead end. So, is art just a global conspiracy of Emperor's Robe-makers? Or are there some questions that will finally yield some answers?"

George Egerton-Warburton @ PICA

Event Title: George Egerton-Warburton: Oulipian Poetry.
Participating Artists: George Egerton-Warburton.

Venue:
PICA,
51 James Street Northbridge .

Description: Administration is just Oulipian Poetry is a significant solo exhibition by Western Australian born, Melbourne-based artist, George Egerton-Warburton. Inspired by the rule generated poetry techniques of the Oulipo, a group of French and Italian writers and mathematicians in the 1960s, the artist draws on personal anecdotes to translate traumatic and banal everyday experiences into sympathetic structures. A large architectural intervention will see carved pieces of the gallery walls suspended from a sprawling 7 metre mobile, an exploration of the ways in which our creative energies and small artistic gestures have the power to affect the balance of power. Egerton-Warburton‚s interconnected installation will see the gallery filled with paintings, videos, sculptures and the scent of rain on dirt, as it collectively forms a sensorially charged, contemplative environment.

Dates: 13 September 2014 to 2 November 2014.
Opening Times: Tuesday - Sunday, 10am - 5pm.

A 3D micro-cinema is housed inside its cavernous structure featuring Coates‚ new sci-fi climbing opera. An entire gallery will be turned into an interactive climbing room in which visitors will be rewarded for scaling great heights by being able to view hidden films.

This new, live audio-visual work will be premiered by West Australian trailblazer Kynan Tan in a one-night only concert. Two years in the making, perspectives [temporal] is a unique occasion to see and hear how Kynan Tan masterfully intertwines sound and image. Hijacking PICA's vast main gallery, this double projection, multi-speaker synaesthetic composition deliberately confuses and resets the real and imaginary networks that surround our waking and sleeping lives.

Using and testing the limits of a massive sound system in the acoustic environment of PICA's double height gallery, Tan will undertake a live exploration of the transference of light and sound energy into physical realms, immersing the audience in a powerful sensory experience.
