Participating Artists

Karen Frankel

Venue Name

Mundaring Arts Centre

Venue Address

7190 Great Eastern Hwy Perth Western Australia 6073
Australia

Description

Mixed media artist Karen Frankel's exhibition DRAWN is a reference to the inevitable marks and lines that appear in her ever-present sketch book, thumbnail sketches and final works. She draws inspiration from the world around her - flowers from daily walks and views from travels to the Pilbara and New Zealand especially.

Born in Zimbabwe, Frankel grew up surrounded and influenced by the art of her father, artist Eli Zagoria. Moving to Western Australia in 1984, she was captivated by the rugged beauty of the landscape. As a largely self-taught artist, Frankel broadened her arts practice by taking part in intensive workshops with many renowned artists around Australia including Ian De Souza, Tony Smibert and Judith White. Attracted to the shapes of colour, dark and light, texture and the spaces created between and around subjects, Frankel's mixed media process involves using a variety of paper, inks and acrylic to form rich layers which she then draws onto. This produces vibrant, intense works which illustrate her overriding philosophy - both as an artist and teacher - that the pleasure is in the process, regardless of the end result.

Frankel has exhibited extensively across WA, developing a following of devoted workshop participants and collectors. She is renowned for her ability to teach beginners in a fun and relaxing way and on Sunday's throughout the exhibition, 24 Nov – 22 Dec, Frankel will present talks and workshops at Mundaring Arts Centre (Bookings essential visit www.mundaringartscentre.com.au).

Gifted | Artists in Focus at Mundaring Arts Centre

Event Title

Gifted | Artists in Focus

Participating Artists

Jane Button and Sue Cotton

Venue Name

Mundaring Arts Centre

Venue Address

7190 Great Eastern Hwy Mundaring Western Australia 6073
Australia

Description

Leading into the festive season and the tradition of gift-giving, 'gifted' local artists Sue Cotton and Jane Button to offer an insight into their creative practices through exhibition, residency and workshops.

Sue Cotton has created art all her life. With pen and paper ever ready, Cotton finds drawing allows her to think, ideas flowing along with the pen. For GIFTED, her body of work is a distillation of all her years of drawing, sparked by a phrase or a statement from a friend, a family member, or eaves dropped from a stranger on a train. She makes these snatches of conversation visible not so much through her intricately drawn lines but through the negative spaces created between these lines. These gaps or negative spaces form a language of their own as Cotton draws on and on.

Local artist Jane Button grew up surrounded by the natural beauty of the Perth hills. She considers herself a collector and is fascinated by the assemblage of objects. Button explains, "Sometimes the most fragile objects in nature are the most powerful. My works are not big and full of grandeur, but made of small, seemingly insignificant components that all come together to form a story." Her 'match box' works treasure captured moments in time, while her 'boats' evoke the fragility of life's journey. Button is in residence on Thursdays and will present workshops for all ages throughout GIFTED (Bookings essential, visit www.mundaringartscentre.com.au).

Event Title

26°S 121°E | On the Map

Participating Artists

Various artists

Venue Name

Mundaring Arts Centre

Venue Address

7190 Great Eastern Hwy Mundaring Western Australia 6073
Australia

Description

26°S 121°E | On the Map presents a comprehensive survey of printmaking in Western Australia. Curated by Laura A. Taylor this exhibition, presented by Mundaring Arts Centre, unites work by 35 WA print artists and offers a tantalising glimpse of the diversity of print practices that can be found between Broome and Albany.

Representing well-known WA printmakers and introducing innovative younger artists, the exhibition pays homage to all WA artists working in the ancient art form of 'print making' – such as etching, woodcut, lithography, screen-printing - or reinterpret these processes into a modern narrative which speaks to a world that increasingly values the hand-made over the mass-produced. 26°S 121°E | On the Map testifies that while geographical location may inform these artists' works, it is no barrier to plugging into the global contemporary arts network.

The exhibition, which is funded by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries of WA, is held in tandem with Print Council of Australia's national 2017 Print Commission folio launch and is supported by a series of workshops delivered by PAWA printmakers at the Midland Junction Arts Centre. For further information and bookings, please visit www.mundaringartscentre.com.au or call 9295 3991.
