Description: Ornaments of Language borrows its title from the literary term 'ornamental language'. In literature, various devices of ornamental language enrich our experience of the written word beyond its usual literal meaning. Similarly, the artists selected for 'Ornaments of Language' employ various artistic strategies to tackle pertinent themes. Thoughtful, considered and enriched with a sense of poetry, these works expand our understanding of the most humble everyday materials and illuminate the implications of images and objects in the visual realm.
From this eclectic cross section of contemporary artists comes an exhibition of diverse cultural and artistic influences, informed by universal themes and infused with colour and vibrancy.
Ornaments of Language is a celebration of sorts, a feast for the senses and food for thought, from a performance which challenges the conventional use of common household items, to bejewelled icons and entire Christmas table settings cast from sugar. The final exhibition of the year at Melody Smith Gallery presents the full spectrum of the Christmas day celebration, from the spectacle of the everyday to the aftermath of the occasion.
