Emily Hornum @ Spectrum Project Space

Event Title: The Substance of Memory.
Participating Artists: Emily Hornum.

Venue: Spectrum Project Space, Edith Cowan University, Building 3.191, 2
Bradford St, Mount Lawley, WA 6050.

Description: An exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Emily Hornum
integrating videos, projections, photomedia and sound installations.
These immersive installations fuse the boundaries of analogue and
digital technologies to illuminate our material engagement and
multi-sensory experience with family archives and to question the influence
this has on the performance of memory.

The Substance of Memory is comprised of a series of installations that will
immerse the audience into a nostalgic dialogue with family archiving
practices. The inherent materiality of traditional and contemporary
technologies alters the way we mediate our bodily engagement and visual
experience with family archives. This creative praxis illuminates the
ephemeral nature of memory and our reliance on external devices to
archive our family memories.

Emily will use Spectrum Project Space as an open studio throughout her
residency between 13 Jan to 27 Jan to refine these installations. The
culminating exhibition will be open from 27 Jan to 8 Feb, with an opening
night held on Thursday 29 Jan at 5pm. An Artist Talk will take place on
Friday 6 Feb at 2pm, to stimulate discussion surrounding new media and its
effect on the family archive and memory, whilst the artist reflexively
engages with her two-year practice-led research.

Loren Kronemyer @ Light Locker Art Space, Roe Street Car Park Arcade

Event Title: Holoscenery

Venue: Light Locker Art Space, Roe Street Car Park Arcade, 120 James
Street (Roe Street Car Park Arcade), Northbridge.

Description: Holoscenery, an exhibition of new work by Loren Kronemeyer,
promotes a reassassment of our idealised and distorted visions of "nature".
Lenticular prints, transformed by cutting and rebuilt into
three-dimensional, crystalline structures, corrupt the hyper vibrant images
of the world they propagate.

Geologists use the term Holoscene to refer to our current epoch, an era
encompassing 11,700 years that has been defined by the impact of human
civilization on the planet. The title Holoscenery is portmanteau of the
words Holoscene and scenery, meaning the visual representation of landscape.
The scenery depicted herein draws from a collection of lenticular prints,
cheaply made plastic representations of idealised fantasy landscapes. They
have been cut, altered and deconstructed into new and unrecognisable forms,
providing a window into the abstract and unknown future of the way we
experience landscape.

Loren Kronemyer is an artist from Los Angeles, California. Her work focuses
on attempting to bridge the language gap between humans and other life
forms.

subverting the male gaze is an exhibition by Perth photographer Louella
Martin. This series of photographs is a result of the artist undertaking an

objectification of the female form within visual art. The female as an art
form is an icon of beauty and sensuality that has been shaped and

stereotypes within visual art, questioning the conventional modes of desire

Three questions not to ask about art ...

"Art raises a lot of questions. That's what it does. If an art work in a gallery or a news story has made you ask 'what the …?', it has already started to do its job.

But for many who are not familiar with art, some of the most often asked questions of art just lead to a dead end. So, is art just a global conspiracy of Emperor's Robe-makers? Or are there some questions that will finally yield some answers?"

Event Title: George Egerton-Warburton: Oulipian Poetry.
Participating Artists: George Egerton-Warburton.

Venue:
PICA,
51 James Street Northbridge .

Description: Administration is just Oulipian Poetry is a significant solo exhibition by Western Australian born, Melbourne-based artist, George Egerton-Warburton. Inspired by the rule generated poetry techniques of the Oulipo, a group of French and Italian writers and mathematicians in the 1960s, the artist draws on personal anecdotes to translate traumatic and banal everyday experiences into sympathetic structures. A large architectural intervention will see carved pieces of the gallery walls suspended from a sprawling 7 metre mobile, an exploration of the ways in which our creative energies and small artistic gestures have the power to affect the balance of power. Egerton-Warburton‚s interconnected installation will see the gallery filled with paintings, videos, sculptures and the scent of rain on dirt, as it collectively forms a sensorially charged, contemplative environment.

An entire gallery will be turned into an interactive climbing room in which visitors will be rewarded for scaling great heights by being able to view hidden films.

This new, live audio-visual work will be premiered by West Australian trailblazer Kynan Tan in a one-night only concert. Two years in the making, perspectives [temporal] is a unique occasion to see and hear how Kynan Tan masterfully intertwines sound and image. Hijacking PICA's vast main gallery, this double projection, multi-speaker synaesthetic composition deliberately confuses and resets the real and imaginary networks that surround our waking and sleeping lives.

Using and testing the limits of a massive sound system in the acoustic environment of PICA's double height gallery, Tan will undertake a live exploration of the transference of light and sound energy into physical realms, immersing the audience in a powerful sensory experience.

Description: Miles Carpenter's new body of work continues to explore relationships between pattern and image.

His new series of ornate ceramic animal busts and highly patterned animal portraits are the product of a year and a half's work following his captivating show "Wolf Skin".
"Nature needs to be preserved and celebrated. I don't think we can be reminded enough that the way we treat the environment is affecting all living things one way or another. The willful ignorance has to stop". Carpenter explains

Carpenter's sculptural works depict a stable of spectacular horned animals as worshiped deities. His paintings portray the noble beasts and their innate dignity whilst depicting the destruction of their habitat and the imposition of the human environment, represented through pattern.

His minimal and contrasting palette creates a strong connection throughout the series. Contrasting colour energizes the otherwise tranquil paintings, illustrating the divergence between human and natural environments.
