A Life's Work by D. Thornton Hick
For those of us who have had the privilege of growing up with the beach at our front door and the Australian bush at our back door we may underestimate the influence this freedom has on shaping and moulding us as we grow. For those with an artistic eye, natures influence becomes a constant visual stimulus to create. Darrell Thornton Hick (1941-2013) always delighted in scouting about for beach flotsam and finding 'useful things'. He described himself as an artist and traveller, becoming a designer in the 1960's which permitted him to design, create and travel throughout his working life. Sailing and a family history based in shipping out of Southampton in the UK led to history writing and travel throughout Europe and Australia but always, always Thornton painted in his spare time. Exhibiting his artworks, sculptures and contemporary furniture since 1990, this exhibition, Sea Salt & Red Dirt, is the first exhibition of Thornton's work since his passing. Presented upstairs at Little Creatures, 40 Mews Road, Fremantle from 6 – 28 April, the exhibition is a rare opportunity to glimpse the wondrous influence the Australian landscape had on this creative, inquisitive, gentle man who captured the weather, the tides and the character of our country in gouache, pastel, charcoal, oils or watercolour in every moment he could take. |
