Description: Where a window 'frames', a door beckons you to enter, this exhibition offers new ways of experiencing the creative process - both for the viewer and for the artist.

Nine artists have been invited to produce work outside their normal practice. They're mostly painters or mixed media artists who work in 2 dimensions, and in this rare exhibition at Perth Galleries, they have leapt from the flat plane into the third dimension with surprising results.

They've created an exciting array of assemblages that echo and parallel their usual practice in a variety of unexpected approaches - from drawings in space, to harnessed brushstrokes, to construction pieces made from unorthodox materials, these pieces will no doubt stimulate the senses and awaken the mind's eye.

Description: Transforming the gallery into his own deserted island, North American nomad Nathan Stevens leaves you stranded in this landscape of found and lost discoveries. Influenced by ideas of cartography and communication breakdown, surveying and self-surveillance, this moving series of installations unpacks processes of personal displacement and dislocation through interactive broadcasts from a shipwrecked radio station; endless conversations with an auto-poetic artificial intelligence; a model for multi-dimensional travel to the Bermuda Triangle; and a body of unidentifiable glass objects.

The Mid West Art Prize 2011 - Call for Entries

The Geraldton Regional Art Gallery, working in conjunction with the City of Geraldton-Greenough and the Art Gallery of West Australia, has long seen the need for a major art prize exhibition coordinated and staged here in Geraldton-Greenough. As a result, the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery will launch the inaugural Mid West Art Prize Exhibition on 5 March 2011. The exhibition is open to artists throughout Western Australia working in any medium. A strict selection process will be adhered to so as to ensure an exhibition of the highest calibre. Entries will be limited to a maximum of 2 works per artist ensuring a diverse exhibition of broad appeal. Judging will be completed by three independent people from outside of the region who are respected within the arts community.

Exploring gender and racial politics through the lens of cinematic convention, Just weaves mesmerizing narratives of enigmatic solemnity. Working consistently with small ensemble casts over many years, Just also fully engages the viewer with beautifully crafted soundtracks adapting popular songs to unravel emotional interrelationships with breathtaking intensity. This exhibition features the Australian premiere of a new work, Sirens of Chrome.

The Quod Project is a multidisciplinary art exhibition by Tania Ferrier about a building called the Quod. The Quod is the largest deaths in custody site in Australia and is now part of a luxury style tourist resort on Rottnest Island. In collaboration with Aboriginal elders representing Wadjemup/Rottnest and photographer James Kerr, 'The Quod Project' exposes hidden history and holds up a mirror to ourselves; are we responsible for our ignorance?

Event Title: The Strange Quiet of Things Misplaced II.

Description: The past and transition to a new country and culture are also themes coursing through the incredibly intricate textile work of Elisa Markes-Young, a Polish-born artist who studied in Germany before migrating to Australia.

This second collection of 'The Strange Quiet of Things Misplaced' deals with memory and the unreliability of our recollections. It is a truly fascinating subject and an utterly unique way of representing it.

The first pieces in her current series - 'The Strange Quiet of Things Misplaced' - focused on the (incorrect) belief that memories are stored neatly in some sort of a cupboard to be pulled out whenever needed, while this series focuses on the so-called 'flexible memory' which is closely tied to the phenomenon of false memories.

We've known for a while that memories are being constantly rearranged according to circumstances. (Augustine called it 'the present of things past'). Research instead indicates that every time we 'remember' we put the memory together again. It blurs the line between constructed memories - as in 'false' memories - and memory as a constructive power. This brings up uncomfortable questions about our reliance on memory and the 'truth' recalled under oath.

Elisa Markes-Young says that "it also opens unlimited possibilities to someone like myself still not at home in new surroundings, clinging onto the past and as an artist for whom memory is not only the subject but also the source my work".

Avital Sheffer @ Gadfly Gallery

Description: The world of antiquity is a constant source of inspiration for Avital Sheffer. She is particularly interested in the "frayed edges of religions and mythologies", where dialogue and cross-fertilization with other cultures takes place. As a metaphor for her own migration to Australia from Israel 11 years ago, her own story merges with that of countless others whose personal experiences of conflict, migration, dislocation and renewal intersect with the dilemmas between traditions and modernity

Sheffer has created great interest around the world with her hand-formed earthenware vessels whose forms speak of the ancient world whilst creating a sense of transition to the modern. Each unique piece is richly embellished with exquisite motifs and calligraphy from ancient Jewish and Middle Eastern texts.

Avital is the recipient of two Australia Council grants and was last year elected to the International Academy of Ceramics in Geneva. She has been a finalist in many important art awards over the last couple of years.

Sheffer's work has been touring Australia for the last two years, but this is the first time that Avital has exhibited in Western Australia. It is with pleasure that we invite you to meet Avital and experience the beauty of these 18 never-before-seen vessels either at the preview night or the opening night, and enjoy the company of our guest speakers.
