Didot Klasta @ Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA)

Event Title: VICTIMS & VERSIONS : Indonesian mass killings 1965

Participating Artists: Didot Klasta

Venue: Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA), Perth Cultural Centre. 51 James Street, Northbridge.

Description: DIdot klasta is in residency developing the concept and installation artform for a new series of works on the Indonesian mass killings of 1965.

The mysterious kidnapping and murder of six Indonesian army generals by a group of military personnel in early October 1965 was used as a pretext to destroy the popular leftist movement in Indonesia in 1965.  Between 500,000 and three million people were killed by military and military directed civilian militias. Many were imprisoned without trial and their families experience ongoing discrimination.

Following these acts of ‘genocide’, President Sukarno’s Populist revolutionary administration was crushed and was replaced by a new corrupt and repressive regime, which served it’s own domestic elite and western interests.  They still rule the country today.

Opening Times: Thu-Fri-Sat, 10.30-3pm.
