Description: This body of work illustrates the rich tonal range of traditional palladium printing on fine art paper using the latest digital negative techniques. Different developers were used to render different effects. PRECIOUS METAL is a beautiful collection of images that evokes the 'old world' feel of this fine art process.
Info about Palladium Printing: Palladium is a rare and lustrous, silvery-white metal that resembles platinum and is part of the platinum group metals. Simply put, it is a precious metal.
Palladium prints are contact prints. This is where the negative is in direct contact with the UV light sensitive paper, with the image produced being the same size as the negative.
This historical process dates back to the mid 1800's. However, its popularity declined in the 1930's with the mass production of silver gelatin papers and rising prices of the rare metal. The 1970's saw a resurgence in the medium as the stability of palladium provided superior permanence and archival quality over silver based papers.
Nowadays palladium is used as an alternative process, producing beautiful fine art images.
All my palladium prints are unique and handcrafted, using high quality materials. Palladium printing allows me to combine the old and the new. Traditional darkroom printing with digital techniques to create the negatives.
In the printing process, I use different developers to render different results. Palladium produces a slightly warmer tone than platinum. I use potassium oxalate developer to print out the traditional warmer toned images. The ammonium citrate developer is used to produce a cooler, black toned image. I use this to give my palladium prints a platinum like effect.
