Elisa Markes-Young @ Gadfly Gallery
Event Title: The Strange Quiet of Things Misplaced II.
Participating Artists: Elisa Markes-Young.
Venue:
Gadfly Gallery,
131B Waratah Ave,
Dalkeith WA 6009.
Description: The past and transition to a new country and culture are also themes coursing through the incredibly intricate textile work of Elisa Markes-Young, a Polish-born artist who studied in Germany before migrating to Australia.
This second collection of 'The Strange Quiet of Things Misplaced' deals with memory and the unreliability of our recollections. It is a truly fascinating subject and an utterly unique way of representing it.
The first pieces in her current series - 'The Strange Quiet of Things Misplaced' - focused on the (incorrect) belief that memories are stored neatly in some sort of a cupboard to be pulled out whenever needed, while this series focuses on the so-called 'flexible memory' which is closely tied to the phenomenon of false memories.
We've known for a while that memories are being constantly rearranged according to circumstances. (Augustine called it 'the present of things past'). Research instead indicates that every time we 'remember' we put the memory together again. It blurs the line between constructed memories - as in 'false' memories - and memory as a constructive power. This brings up uncomfortable questions about our reliance on memory and the 'truth' recalled under oath.
Elisa Markes-Young says that "it also opens unlimited possibilities to someone like myself still not at home in new surroundings, clinging onto the past and as an artist for whom memory is not only the subject but also the source my work".
Dates: 12 November 2010 to 28 November 2010.
Opening Times: Tuesdays by appointment, Wednesday-Friday 11am-5pm, Saturdays and Sundays 2- 5pm. Closed Monday and Public Holidays.

Avital Sheffer @ Gadfly Gallery
Participating Artists: Avital Sheffer.
Venue:
Gadfly Gallery,
131B Waratah Ave,
Dalkeith WA 6009.
Description: The world of antiquity is a constant source of inspiration for Avital Sheffer. She is particularly interested in the "frayed edges of religions and mythologies", where dialogue and cross-fertilization with other cultures takes place. As a metaphor for her own migration to Australia from Israel 11 years ago, her own story merges with that of countless others whose personal experiences of conflict, migration, dislocation and renewal intersect with the dilemmas between traditions and modernity
Sheffer has created great interest around the world with her hand-formed earthenware vessels whose forms speak of the ancient world whilst creating a sense of transition to the modern. Each unique piece is richly embellished with exquisite motifs and calligraphy from ancient Jewish and Middle Eastern texts.
Avital is the recipient of two Australia Council grants and was last year elected to the International Academy of Ceramics in Geneva. She has been a finalist in many important art awards over the last couple of years.
Sheffer's work has been touring Australia for the last two years, but this is the first time that Avital has exhibited in Western Australia. It is with pleasure that we invite you to meet Avital and experience the beauty of these 18 never-before-seen vessels either at the preview night or the opening night, and enjoy the company of our guest speakers.

The paintings are tapestries of colour and tonal studies jutting out of receding dark spaces. Tracy Mortimer @ Alliance Francaise de Perth
Participating Artists: Tracy Mortimer.
Venue:
Alliance Francaise de Perth,
75 Broadway, Nedlands 6009.
Description: This body of work illustrates the rich tonal range of traditional palladium printing on fine art paper using the latest digital negative techniques. Different developers were used to render different effects. PRECIOUS METAL is a beautiful collection of images that evokes the 'old world' feel of this fine art process.
Info about Palladium Printing: Palladium is a rare and lustrous, silvery-white metal that resembles platinum and is part of the platinum group metals. Simply put, it is a precious metal.
Palladium prints are contact prints. This is where the negative is in direct contact with the UV light sensitive paper, with the image produced being the same size as the negative.
This historical process dates back to the mid 1800's. However, its popularity declined in the 1930's with the mass production of silver gelatin papers and rising prices of the rare metal. The 1970's saw a resurgence in the medium as the stability of palladium provided superior permanence and archival quality over silver based papers.
Nowadays palladium is used as an alternative process, producing beautiful fine art images.
All my palladium prints are unique and handcrafted, using high quality materials. Palladium printing allows me to combine the old and the new. Traditional darkroom printing with digital techniques to create the negatives.
In the printing process, I use different developers to render different results. Palladium produces a slightly warmer tone than platinum. I use potassium oxalate developer to print out the traditional warmer toned images. The ammonium citrate developer is used to produce a cooler, black toned image. I use this to give my palladium prints a platinum like effect.
Discover the timeless beauty of this photographic process that is highly regarded as a prince of the photographic medium..

Participating Artists: Alisa Teletovic.
Venue:
Inglewood Hotel,
803 Beaufort Street, Mt Lawley WA.
Description: Come along to meet this exciting new artist.
Born in Europe, spending half her life in Australia, Alisa's art is a true combination of both worlds. Strange figures of the European people mingled with true Australian dreamlike spirit and land, makes Alisa's work unique.
If one looks carefully, one can see that her messages are real and heartfelt, romantic and poetic. Probably because of her own constant fight to survive and belong.
Alisa holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from RMIT University, graduating in 1999 followed by Electronic Design and interactive media in 2000 in Melbourne.
She has been the recipient of several awards and included in the number of collections throughout Australia and Europe.

Crispin Akerman @ Greenhill Galleries
Participating Artists: Crispin Akerman
Venue:
Greenhill Galleries
6 Gugeri Street Claremont WA 6010
Description: Greenhill Galleries is pleased to announce an upcoming exhibition of refined still-life works by Sydney based artist, CRISPIN AKERMAN.
Still life painting both directs and captures the gaze. Worn enamel jugs and bowls suggest a human presence; books and autumn leaves speak of the passing of time. The decorative and architectural balance implied in these forms also carries with it the notion of unbalance and chaos, as if something is about to happen. This is what is interesting about the genre, the contemplative potential in it, the suggestion of the kinetic in the static, the metaphysical promise present in the very words, 'still life'.

End Date: 24.08.10
Opening Times: Tues-Fri, 10-5pm; Sat, 10-4pm

Showcase Gallery

Description:
A Solo Exhibition by P. James Bryans
Do you remember your childhood?
Do you remember what you saw?
Do you remember the feeling? The wonder, the innocence?
Do you remember everything or just the important bits?
For P. James Bryans it was a childhood full of daydreams, farm life and wonder of the bushland down the back block, the thousands of colours in a single blade of grass... the universe.
Growing up on an idyllic farmlet he spent his days (after the animals had been fed) wandering through the bush and giving his imagination free reign.
Now, as an adult, he aims to capture the fleeting moments that we treasure, imperfect and incomplete, but which we hold precious and which make us who we are.

Catherine Gomersall @ Breathing Space, Library, Edith Cowan University
Participating Artists: Catherine Gomersall
Venue:
Breathing Space, Library, Edith Cowan University
2 Bradford St, Mt Lawley
Description: This exhibition of conceptual photographic works explore the "trash bag" as a metaphor for a particular category of emotion: "bad" ones. Emotion itself has largely been treated as bad, as trash, in Western philosophical tradition - emotion has been situated as opposite and inferior to thought: affect versus cognition, passion versus reason, feeling versus thinking. The word trash has been inherited from American popular culture into popular contemporary urban Australian language to mean something other than rubbish, garbage or litter. We speak of feeling like trash. Trash and emotion share a sense of naturalness. A large part of the Western philosophical discourse regards emotion as natural: as wild forces beyond our control. Trash's etymological traces hark back to nature. For example, "trasch" in Middle English were fallen leaves and twigs. Yet, in the contemporary use of the word literal trash has come to signify the objects of consumer culture - discarded wrappers, plastic bottles, unwanted belongings. In the body bags the jumbo sized black rubbish bag embodies its badness and dread.

Venue:
Heathcote Museum & Gallery
Heathcote Cultural Centre, Swan House, Duncraig Road, Applecross
Description: The City of Melville's Heathcote Museum and Gallery will soon be hosting a dynamic collaborative exhibition by South Fremantle artists Dawn Gamblen and Minaxi May. The exhibition, Plasticity, will show the outcome of their artist-in-residence at the Fremantle Arts Centre since December 2009.
Plasticity will be open from Saturday, 24 July to Sunday, 29 August 2010. Plasticity captures the essence of plastic as a vibrantly colourful material that conveys notions of the artificial and inorganic whilst also being undeniably flexible in its use and purpose. Centering on ideas around collecting, artful display, consumerism, process and the experiential nature of art, the artists create sculptural site-specific arrangements using easily identifiable, yet banal, purposeful ready-mades‚ (everyday found and collected objects) in the form of synthetic materials including straws, cups and spray can lids.

Harmonic Sands @ gallery@central
Participating Artists:
Venue:
gallery@central
12 Aberdeen St, Perth
Description: Over a ten day period witness Buddhist Monks transforming Gallery Central into a shrine, with the creation of a sacred and ephemeral sand mandala.
The sand mandala is an intricate sacred artwork made from coloured marble sands. It grows each day as sands are poured a few grains at a time, through ancient funnel implements. The designs, which are 2,500 years old, have been passed through the ages unchanged and are constructed from memory, which is part of a Buddhist Monk‚s rigorous training.
The project invites all to contemplate the impermanence of life by observing the monks spending many hours painstakingly creating something that is then given back to the earth. Drop in to visit the work-in-progress or register to attend the ceremonial opening and closing events. Plus there is also a morning meditation session most days.
Presented by Phen Dhe Ling Tibetan Buddhist Association and proudly supported by the City of Perth and the Office of Multicultural Interests, WA.

picture show exhibitions @ Wolfe Lane
Participating Artists: picture show exhibitions
Venue:
Wolfe Lane
Wolf Lane, Perth rear 321 Murray Street
Description: Following on from the success of FotoFreo 2010 Fringe photography exhibition Cities are Like Oceans, picture show brings you Beauties : an illustration of Victorian printing techniques opening at Wolfe Lane on Tuesday 1 June 2010.
Stepping back in time to a more elegant era the exhibition displays a selection of framed pictures from print artists covering the reign of Queen Victoria. Engravings, mezzotints, Baxter prints and lithographs present an overall theme of beauty and elegance suggesting an ethereal continuity not usually evident for this period and certainly not surviving the early years of the 20th century.
Before the age of photographic reproduction on a commercial scale, print making in the 19th century was the only medium in existence for mass communication. Print makers were highly skilled craftsmen with quality prints taking weeks or months to produce a stark juxtaposition to today‚s culture of snap-and-delete digital photography.
The exhibition has been produced in collaboration with Old Templemore Antiques.
Start Date: 01 June 2010
End Date: 29 June 2010

Description: This series of paintings 'Black & Blue'‚ had me digging deeper into a long standing interest in naive & outsider art...the uncensored eccentricities from the subconcious that have universal themes & expressions that are often direct and unhindered by intellect.
The environment the works have been incubated & produced in can best be described as rural fugliness relieved by art music & books...referred to in titles and the portrait & still-life subjects-in this case sculptures and furniture by Ondrej Mares and Susan's pinata/calavera sculptures inspired by Mexican Day of the Dead Festival.)

Cyrus Cornut @ Wolfe Lane
Participating Artists: Cyrus Cornut
Venue:
Wolfe Lane
Wolf Lane, Perth rear 321 Murray Street
Description: Cities are Like Oceans shows the place of human beings in cities that are increasingly chaotic, and where modernity, dictated by the rule of economics tends to irrevocably take over traditions that have been established over time. Man as a social being no longer has a place here. Human scale has been reduced to nothing. Man, with an individualistic future is lost like a drop in the urban ocean. Cyrus Cornut finds the poetry of fatalism in these cities by putting the human scale into the eternal urban palimpsest, guided by this feeling that links the individual to everything else. The light is that of dawn or dusk, of neon or storms, to dramatise the seemingly unavoidable evolution. Sublime the urban, put enchantment back into reality.

Spectrum - Preview of Fittings and Fixtures of Distinction
Description:
Perth was voted in 2009 by the "Economist" as the fifth most liveable city in the world, but for whom?
Artists Nicola Kaye and Stephen Terry's work deals with what they consider to be a general apathy and disinterest in broader social issues within contemporary Australian society. Kaye and Terry's digital projections, installations and interactive exhibits focus on social inequalities in an attempt to navigate the complex interconnectedness of governments, economics and identity.
By layering and juxtaposing imagery such as public toilets with supposedly "high art" references such as theatre performers to hint at the unseen and unheard.
Fittings and Fixtures of Distinction, a series of night projections, in the Spectrum Project Space windows juxtapose images of decoration and necessity. The work is positioned outside of the gallery context, so the only view the audience are afforded is voyeuristic, expanding on Kaye and Terry's work which deals with public and private spaces.
This show is a continuation of ideas developed in recent works and presentations in London at the University of Westminster (2009), at the International Symposium on Electronic Art in Singapore (2008), in Guangzhou at Sun Yat-Sen University (2007) and as part of the Biennale of Electronic Arts Perth (2007).
Running from from 8:00pm to 10:00pm
* Thursday the 4th March, Friday 5th March and last screening on Saturday 6th March
* Shopfront @ Central, Beaufort Street, Northbridge (on the Beaufort Street side of Central TAFE gallery)

Christophe Canato @ Perth Centre for Photography
Participating Artists: Christophe Canato
Venue:
Perth Centre for Photography
91 Brisbane Street
Perth WA 6000
Description: Perth is the most isolated metropolis in the world. In the current context of globalisation, this Western Australian capital bears resemblance to our European Materialist societies. This urban environment has inspired the photographer, Christophe Canato, to create a series of photographs entitled Ragamuffins.
Consumption, possession, ownership, affection, abandonment, globalisation, migration, nomadism, mobility, homelessness and solitude are but a few of the notions explored in Christophe's body of work.
Ragamuffins is a photographic series of abandoned couches and armchairs throughout the streets of Perth and its surrounding suburbs. This census of objects of near human resemblance is based on the communal theme which focuses on consumer habits and human behaviours in our materialistic society.
From the frills of a flowery patterned grandmother chair to the cracks in a red-leather couch or the missing spring of a bargain recliner, the members of our community have left their mark on Christophe Canato's photographs. These photographs also carry the stigma of our social classes, from the lowest to the highest, the industrious to the indolent, the blossoming to the withering.
If one can easily conjure a classification, then one can also picture the life of the furniture's past owners and the manner in which they have adapted to their social surroundings. From the most luxurious to the most miserable, one can raise the question as to how many of these couches will find a second life and therefore some comfort into the makeshift housing of those disowned by society.
Through the warm colours of the artificially lit city, Christophe Canato's nocturnal shots give the inanimate objects a soul. The context is cosy, intimate and warm hearted, nevertheless the ideas of isolation, solitude and abandonment still maintain their significance. These photographs encourage the viewer to focus on the object and its immediate environment: a street, a building.
With a feeling of déjà-vu, Christophe Canato's images create an amalgamation between the idea of indoor and outdoor, comfort and discomfort, portraiture and still-life.

All artists participating will be painting terracotta plant pots in traditional or contemporary themes to wow the festival goers with.
Each pot will be sprayed with varnish to make sure it retains a beautiful, permanent shine to it.
Each artist will complete two each; both for sale, with the complete takings of one pot going to the schools. Prices will differ, depending on size of the pots and materials used and if the pot contains anything!
It is up to the artist to plant a flower or plant or to submit the pot empty.
The pot may be painted, embellished, altered, you name it...all in the name of creation...
